On Thursday, March 19, all members of the PCMA UW archaeological expedition to Ethiopia were pulled out. The decision to cut short the fieldwork season was dictated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant travel restrictions, leading to a growing paralysis of air traffic.
This year’s work in Ethiopia was the first season of excavation and documentation in Debre Gergis in the province of Tigray. This archaeological site probably holds the ruins of a church from the Aksumite period. The mission, headed by dr Michela Gaudiello (PCMA UW) worked there for about two weeks and managed to carry out parts of its research program.
