In the series of PCMA Seminars we present the lecture of Dr. Vujadin Ivanišević from the Archaeological Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade titled “Caričin Grad (Justiniana Prima): The Landscape of an Early Byzantine City”. The seminar will be held online.
Justiniana Prima is one of the few new urban foundations from the 6th century in the Byzantine world. Archaeological research at this site is a fundamental source of knowledge about urban thought at the end of antiquity. As such, it is an important point of reference for the study of the site Marea in Egypt, studied by the PCMA UW and the Faculty of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw, which was erected at the same time.
Abstract: “For a long time, Caričin Grad (today, in Serbia) was considered a city limited to the Acropolis, the Upper Town and the Lower Town, as can be seen from various publications related to its urbanism. Thanks to new geophysical survey methods and LiDAR, many new structures have been detected.
Caričin Grad offers vast possibilities for the study of the fortification system and urbanism of an early Byzantine city, as the site and its immediate surroundings were not reoccupied after their abandonment in the early 7th century. The landscape still bears the imprint of numerous walls surrounding the town, the remains of churches belonging to small hamlets or even monasteries, and a developed defense system with a series of fortifications erected in its vicinity.”
The seminar will take place online on Zoom on Friday, 25th February 2022, at 11 am CET.
