On October 4th, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, presented appointment letters to the Vice-Deans for Student Affairs, unit directors, and directors of education for the 2024–2028 term. Assoc. Prof. Artur Obłuski was reappointed as the Director of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA).
Assoc. Prof. Artur Obłuski served as the Director of the PCMA UW during the 2020–2024 term, and from 2018 to 2020, he acted as Interim Director. From 2015 to 2020, he led the PCMA UW Research Centre in Cairo. He is currently heading PCMA UW expeditions in Old Dongola and Ghazali in Sudan. For research and conservation work at the Old Dongola site, he has secured two grants from the European Research Council, as well as grants from the National Science Centre and the ALIPH Foundation.
He is an archaeologist specializing in the study of medieval Nubia. He advocates a change in the approach to archaeological research in Africa and the Middle East from considering it as a purely scientific endeavor towards using heritage to foster economic development of local communities and their active involvement in the research process.
