Presentations in the PCMA Seminar series continue this February with the talk: “The 2021 campaign of archaeological excavations on the Acropolis of Tyre. The Roman temple compound” presented by Dr. Francisco J. Núñez, one of the project’s co-directors.
Abstract: “This seminar offers the preliminary results of the last campaign of archaeological excavations in the acropolis of Tyre, in Lebanon, and the future perspectives of the project, which is the result of the collaboration between the General Directorate of Antiquities of Lebanon, the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw.
Despite the complicated nature of the site, recent campaigns in that sector of the ancient island evidenced the remains of a temple built anew in Roman times and an urbanistic compound connected to it. The monumental character of this architectural complex is made evident by the nature of the remains of the temple, its location on a podium, and a porticoed processional road that led to its entrance. Besides, the presence of another shrine reinforces the sacral character of this monumental complex.
The existence of these structures has gone unnoticed until now; it reinforces the religious character of this part of the island over the centuries. This sector was a cemetery in the earlier stages of the Late Bronze Age, contains the remains of an – also monumental – basilica of the Byzantine period, of the Cathedral of the Crusaders, and nowadays, it is connected with a modern Muslim cemetery.”
The seminar will take place online on Zoom on Thursday, 17th February 2022, at 11 am CET.
