The last day of the conference “Poles on the Nile”, being the “Kingdom of Makuria Day”, ended in celebrations of a distinguished scholar in this field, Professor Włodzimierz Godlewski. The volume, Aegyptus et Nubia Christiana. The Włodzimierz Godlewski Jubilee Volume on the Occasion of his 70th Birthday presents over 35 articles on topics related to research on Christian Nubia and Egypt, mirroring the scholarly interests of the Jubilee. Over 200 persons took the opportunity to thank and congratulate Prof. Godlewski by putting their names in the book.
Professor Włodzimierz Godlewski has headed the Chair of Egypt and Nubia at the University of Warsaw for the past 20 years. He specializes in archaeology of late antique and early medieval cultures in the Nile valley. Under the auspices of the PCMA he has directed excavations at a monastic complex in Naqlun (Egypt) and the capital of the medieval Nubian kingdom of Makuria at Dongola (Sudan). A long-time employee of the National Museum in Warsaw, he headed it in 1990–1994. For decades connected with the PCMA, where he served as Scientific Secretary of the Research Centre in Cairo, as a member of the PCMA’s Scientific Council and the Editorial Board of PCMA publications. As an active member of many scholarly associations he has organized prestigious scientific events in Warsaw, such as the 3rd International Congress of Coptic Studies in 1984 and the 11th International Conference of Nubian Studies in 2006.
