On Sunday, October 19th, the PCMA UW Cairo Seminars continue at the PCMA Research Centre in Cairo. Izabela Uchman (Cairo-based Polish artist and conservator) will deliver a lecture entitled: “Wandering through the Lands of Wonders.”
The talk presents “Wandering through the Lands of Wonders”—an artistic project shaped by three decades of work across the Middle East. Direct encounters with monuments, landscapes, and communities prompted the artist to reflect on the fragile relationship between the individual and cultural heritage. The project explores questions of identity and cultural affiliation, while proposing an artistic platform for intercultural dialogue. The lecture will also introduce Uchman’s solo exhibition of the same title, curated by Nagwa Mahdy and presented at Odyssey Art Gallery from 15 October to 1 November.
Izabela Uchman is a Polish artist and conservator of fine arts based in Cairo. She graduated with distinction from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 2002 and has since collaborated with numerous cultural institutions, including UNESCO. She developed her own type of artwork called “LETTEREALITY,” transforming selected texts into unique visual forms. Her style combines symbols rooted in diverse cultures, reflecting a particular interest in Arabic calligraphy, ornamentation, and ancient Egyptian art. Her works are held in public and private collections in Europe, the Middle East, and the USA, and have been acquired by the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka.
The seminar will be held on Sunday, 19 October at 7 pm (Cairo time) at the PCMA UW Research Centre in Cairo, 11 Mahalla St., Heliopolis. The seminar will not be recorded.
This lecture series presents the latest research on Egypt’s heritage — from Antiquity to the modern period — and, in selected cases, on the heritage of neighboring countries. The topics cover the broadest possible spectrum, ranging from archaeological and historical studies to research on material culture, art, religion, and society.
The series is coordinated by Dr. Anastasiia Stupko-Lubczynska (Head of the Department of Egyptian Archaeology) and Tomasz Kania (Head of PCMA Research Centre in Cairo).
