With deep sorrow, we say farewell to Dr. Magdalena Łaptaś — an art historian and archaeologist, a distinguished expert in Byzantine art and Christian heritage in Nubia and Egypt.
She was professionally affiliated with the Institute of Art History at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. For many years, she also worked at the National Museum in Warsaw. In addition, she took part in archaeological missions associated with the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Warsaw.
Her work took her to Egypt, Lebanon, and above all, Sudan, where she was actively involved in the discovery and documentation of medieval Nubian churches adorned with wall paintings in Banganarti and in the region of Lagia el Ga’ab. Her numerous publications and conference presentations focused on Christian Nubian art, iconography, and interpretations of the wall paintings from the cathedrals in Faras, Old Dongola, and Banganarti.
She will be remembered as an exceptional person — passionate, dedicated, and deeply committed to her work.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.
