Visit of European Union Ambassadors to Paphos

At the invitation of H.E. Mr. Marek Szczepanowski, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Cyprus, a meeting of ambassadors of several European Union Member States with Polish archaeologists conducting excavations in the ancient city of Nea Paphos was held at the Paphos Archaeological Park.

The event was attended by H.E. Mr. Vladimír Němec, Ambassador of the Czech Republic; H.E. Mr. Willem Wouter Plomp, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; H.E. Mr. Gabriel Ferrán Carrión, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain; and H.E. Ms. Susanne Bachfischer, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria.

The guests were guided around the archaeological site by Professor Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka, Head of the PCMA UW Research Centre in Cyprus, and Dr Paweł Lech, both representing the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw (PCMA UW).

The meeting was also attended by Mr. Phedonas Phedonos, Mayor of Paphos, and Mr. Eustathios Raptou, representative of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.

The event was organized as part of activities accompanying Poland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It is worth noting that the presidency is held in rotating trios, and the current presidency trio consists of Poland (January–June 2025), Denmark (July–December 2025), and Cyprus (January–June 2026).

The aim of the visit was not only to showcase the achievements of Polish scholarship, but also to strengthen partnerships among EU Member States in the context of shared cultural heritage and academic cooperation.
