We are pleased to announce that Dr Urszula Wicenciak-Núñez has been awarded the degree of doktor habilitowany (postdoctoral degree). The decision was made by the Council of the Discipline of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw on April 9, 2025.
Dr habil. Urszula Wicenciak-Núñez specializes in the archaeology of the Levant from the Iron Age through the Byzantine period. Her research focuses on ceramic production and potting traditions in the context of the ancient economy of Phoenicia. She conducts comprehensive studies on ceramic vessels from the eastern Mediterranean, with particular emphasis on assemblages from excavations in Lebanon. These include rural sites such as Chhim and Jiyeh in the hinterland of Sidon, as well as major Phoenician urban centers such as Tyre and Beirut. She also works on selected categories of ceramics from Cyprus, notably from Nea Paphos and Kourion. Her extensive fieldwork experience encompasses archaeological projects across different periods and regions, including Sicily, Egypt, Sudan, and Kuwait.
Currently, her research engages with the field of sensory archaeology, with a focus on the analysis of organic residues—such as fats, oils, resins, and wine—preserved in Phoenician ceramic vessels, particularly unguentaria and amphoriskoi. These studies, based on material from various sites around the Mediterranean and Black Seas, provide new insights into the multifunctional uses of these containers in trade, ritual practices, and daily life.
