The PCMA UW Research Centre in Cairo hosted a special event: an Introductory Course of Old Nubian. The two-week-long workshop was co-organized by the Institut français d’archéologie orientale and PCMA RC in Cairo, in co-operation with Fayoum University.
The courses were held in turn at the IFAO and the PCMA and attended by over a dozen participants – students, PhD candidates, museum curators and lecturers from, i.a., Egypt, France, Italy, and Poland. During their time at the PCMA they attended daily classes focused on reading and translating.
In the previous week at the IFAO they had been given the basics of Old Nubian grammar, therefore at the PCMA their exercises could be based on an actual text of Old Nubian corpus, The Miracle of Saint Mina. All teaching was given by Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei, the leading specialist of Old Nubian, who also gave a lecture on 11th September to a wider audience.
It was a pleasure to host all of the attendees and we do hope that they had a great time with us. Many thanks to all of the participants for spending this exciting week with us!
