Highlights of the Digital Documentation Workshop in Cairo

The ‘Digital Documentation Workshop” took place on 10–14 May at the PCMA UW Research Centre in Cairo. The program was attended by archaeological inspectors, museum professionals, and archaeologists selected by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA).

The training focused on equipping participants with practical skills in photogrammetry and its integration with GIS tools for archaeological documentation. Over the course of the workshop, participants learned how to plan and carry out photogrammetric recording, process image datasets, and produce key outputs such as orthophotographs and 3D models. They also gained experience in combining these datasets within a GIS environment and ensuring their spatial accuracy through georeferencing.

The program was structured around a sequence of thematic sessions, including the basics of photogrammetry and Structure from Motion (SfM), data processing workflows, field documentation strategies, and the integration of photogrammetric products with GIS. The final sessions were devoted to preparing complete documentation of archaeological sites and presenting the results of participants’ work.

It was the second iteration of the workshop, the first having taken place in Warsaw in 2025. This year’s edition was once again led by Adrian Chlebowski, Head of PCMA UW Digital Archaeology Lab and Dr Piotr Zakrzewski (PCMA UW), who were joined this year by Ossama Bassiouny of the SCA, who had participated in last year’s training session.
