Josep María López Garí passed away on Sunday, 29 March 2026. Born in Palma de Mallorca in 1964, Gari devoted his professional life to archaeology and to the protection of cultural heritage, combining fieldwork with long-term institutional engagement. He was a member of the Lebanese-Spanish-Polish Archaeological Project in Tyre, where he contributed to the study and preservation of one of the most significant archaeological sites of the eastern Mediterranean.
Beyond his involvement in international research, Gari played a fundamental role in the protection, management, and promotion of the archaeological heritage of Ibiza. He served as Director Insular de Patrimonio and as Director of the Ponencia Técnica de Patrimonio between 2008 and 2011, and was deeply committed to safeguarding the material past and ensuring its transmission to future generations. Through his efforts, Ibiza’s archaeological landscape gained both visibility and a stronger framework of protection. In recognition of this work, he was awarded the Premi Savina in 2005.
