The PCMA UW Research Centre in Cairo continues the series of seminars during which the holders of PCMA scholarships (Stypendium CAŚ) can present the results of their research. The forthcoming one will feature two presentations.
Urszula Laska will give a talk “Traditions of Egyptian Funeral Art in Roman Egypt. Introduction to the research”, and Mieszko Karnas will present on the subject “The inscription Monumentum Adulitanum, i.e. the influence of the Greco-Roman culture on the Horn of Africa”
Abstract (U. Laska): “When Egypt became a Roman province, a new era began in administrative and economic matters, as well as in certain aspects of religion and art. The introduction to the research is based on presenting the historical and religious context and showing examples of the changes that have taken place during this period.”
Abstract (M. Karnas): “Monumentum Adulitanum is the name of two Greek inscriptions that were located in the ancient city of Adulis (in modern-day Eritrea), the main port of the state of Aksum. The monument consists of two parts: the text from the stele of Ptolemy III Euergetes and the text from an empty throne erected by an anonymous local ruler. Monumentum Adulitanum proves the significant influence of Greco-Roman culture on the Horn of Africa and is an important source of knowledge about the political ideology of the kingdom of Aksum.”
The seminar will be held on Tuesday, 11th March 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will not be open to the public.
