The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, announces a competition for an Adjunct position (post-doc) in the research project “Life in the Makurian Metropolis: A Bioarchaeological Inquiry into Medieval Old Dongola, Sudan.” The principal investigator of this project is Dr. Antonio Caruso (PCMA UW).
The Makurian capital of Old Dongola, inhabited from the 5th to the 14th century, is the best-documented medieval Nubian archaeological site. Located on the east bank of the Nile, at the mouth of Wadi Howar, it served as an important hub on trade routes, a major center of goods exchange, and a cosmopolitan socio-cultural and political center of the Kingdom of Makuria.
The aim of the project is to gain an in-depth understanding of the lives of the medieval inhabitants of Old Dongola through the analysis of the natural environment, diet, mobility, and demographic structure of the population on the basis of bioarchaeological and isotopic research. The work focuses on the detailed study of a large medieval cemetery in Old Dongola in order to reconstruct, on this basis, the living conditions in the Makurian metropolis in the Middle Ages.
