Recruitment for programmes under the PCMA Scholarship 2026/2027

The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw is pleased to announce a call for applications for research scholarships in Egypt. The PCMA Scholarship is funded by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA).

The scholarships are dedicated to students, PhD students and employees of Polish universities.

The PCMA Scholarship is intended for individuals wishing to conduct research related to the broadly understood archaeology of Egypt and/or neighboring regions. The scholarship provides an opportunity for academic development and participation in the work of Polish archaeological expeditions in Egypt. The current scholarship amount is 3,000 PLN per month.

The detailed criteria for awarding and implementation of the Scholarship are set out in the PCMA Scholarship Regulations dated 6 May 2025. In the case of Scholarships carried out at the Research Centre in Cairo, the Regulations on Staying at the PCMA Scholarship at the PCMA UW Research Centre in Cairo also apply.

The Director of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw has established scholarship programs at the PCMA Research Centre in Cairo for the 2026/2027 academic year:

Scholarship for students and PhD candidates (for the winter semester or academic year)

The program is intended for students and PhD candidates from Polish universities who are studying archaeology or Egyptology and are preparing academic works in fields related to the history, archaeology, culture, or religion of Egypt.

This program offers a unique opportunity to focus on the preparation of scholarly work in the vibrant academic environment of Cairo, as well as to become acquainted with Polish archaeological expeditions working in Egypt and their teams. Living in Cairo and participating in the city’s academic life also provides an exceptional opportunity to establish valuable connections that may greatly benefit future academic careers.

Residency Conditions:

      • 3 places for a 4-month winter semester scholarship (from 01.10.2026 to 31.01.2027)

Additional details:

      • Completion of the recruitment process and approval of the research project (funded by NAWA) by the scholarship committee
      • Accommodation at the PCMA Research Centre in Cairo
      • Opportunity to take part in field trips organized as part of the scholarship’s academic travel program
      • Possibility to choose a research topic from a list prepared by PCMA staff, to be developed as part of a master’s or doctoral thesis: topics

Candidate profile:

      • A student in their first or second year of a master’s program in archaeology or Egyptology, preparing a thesis related to the history, archaeology, culture, or religion of Egypt or a doctoral candidate working on a dissertation related to the history, archaeology, culture, or religion of Egypt
  • Formal Requirements:

The following information must be provided in the online application form:

      • Title of the project in Polish
      • Title of the project in English
      • Project description (maximum 1000 words)
      • CV and list of publications
      • Expected outcomes of the project by the end of the scholarship period (e.g., publication of results in a journal, article manuscript, database, etc.)

The following documents must be sent by email to pcma.stypendia@uw.edu.pl:

      • A copy of a diploma or a certificate of current student status
      • A recommendation letter from the thesis supervisor (if applicable) or from a scholar affiliated with the project’s subject matter

 

After completing the PCMA Scholarship, a report must be submitted using the template (PDF, docx).

Scholarships Implemented as Part of Field Expeditions in Egypt

These scholarships are intended for individuals who would like to take part in archaeological expeditions in Egypt. Receiving the scholarship is contingent upon arranging the research topic and scope of work with the expedition director. To qualify for one month of scholarship funding, participation in the expedition must last a minimum of 28 days. Stays can range from 1 to 12 months within a calendar year.

  • Required Documents:

The following information must be provided in the online application form:

      • Name of the expedition
      • Requested number of months (1 month = 28 days in Egypt)

The following documents must be sent by email to pcma.stypendia@uw.edu.pl:

      • A copy of a diploma or a certificate of current student status
      • A description of the planned scope of work to be carried out during the expedition (max. 1000 words), signed by the expedition director
      • A signed letter of recommendation from the expedition director

 

After completing the PCMA Scholarship, a report must be submitted.
