The upcoming PCMA seminar will feature Martina Meyr (Städtische Museen Rottweil) with a presentation entitled “Tied Barbarians”.
Abstract: The image of the captive barbarian and defeated opponent has been common in Roman art since the late Republic. With the beginning of the Principate, Augustus created a universal visual language for the public sphere, limited to a few motifs. However, these were very quickly transferred to the private realm.
We would like to explore the development of the motif of tied barbarians and subjugated opponents, both on public monuments as well on everyday objects. Be it the defeated Decebalus or captive barbarians on terra sigillata at the time of the Dacian Wars or Barbarians as every-day furniture fittings after the Marcomannic Wars – the Barbarian for the “kitchen table” was socially accepted.
