The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, holds a workshop: “An Introduction to Phoenician Pottery”. The organizer of the workshop is Dr. Francisco J. Núñez Calvo from the Department of Near Eastern Studies, PCMA UW.
This workshop offers an introduction to the study of the Phoenician ceramic repertoire from its roots in the Late Bronze Age to its final manifestations in the Persian Period, illustrated by hands-on study of the Phoenician ceramics from the various periods. The workshop also deals with the importance of pottery in the study of Phoenician culture and its interaction with other cultural areas, including the Phoenician presence in the Mediterranean.
The workshop is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as specialists, with an interest in the study and analysis of Phoenician ceramics.
Students will be able to:
- Analyze the archaeological ceramic evidence.
- Recognize and describe the physical features of Phoenician pottery.
- Describe and explain the process of ceramic production: workshops, kilns, fabrics, modelling, surface treatment, decoration, production organization and distribution.
- Explain the nature and evolution of the Phoenician ceramic repertoire.
- Be acquainted of the sequential and chronological controversies related to the Phoenician ceramic repertoire.
- Evaluate the role of the Phoenician ceramics and its interaction with the repertoires of other cultural regions.
The seminars will be held on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00 in Room 119 at the PCMA office, starting on the 29th and continuing for five consecutive weeks.

Week 1:
– Introduction to the Phoenician ceramic repertoire: nature as well as sequential and chronological aspects.
– The Phoenician potter: workshops, kilns and their products; production intensity, scale and distribution.
Week 2:
– The direct antecedents: the Late Bronze Age ceramic repertoire in the central Levant (ca. 1550-1050 BCE).
Week 3:
– The Early Iron Age (ca. 1050-925 BCE)
Week 4:
– The Middle Iron Age (ca. 925-825 BCE)
Week 5:
– The Late Iron Age (ca. 825-550 BCE)
Week 6:
– The Persian Period (ca. 550-332 BCE)
Francisco J. Núñez Calvo is a specialist in Phoenician archaeology whose research focuses on ceramic production, technology, and economic organisation across the Mediterranean from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity. He is co-director of the archaeological project on the Acropolis of Tyre. He has led major studies on Late Bronze and Iron Age pottery assemblages from Beirut, Chhim, Jiyeh, Kharayeb, and Tel Jemjim, addressing local production systems and consumption patterns. His work also draws on long-term research at western Mediterranean sites such as Cerro del Villar (Spain) and Sant’Imbenia (Sardinia), allowing him to trace technological transfer, potters’ mobility, and the emergence of regional ceramic traditions within Phoenician and Punic networks.
