At the upcoming PCMA Seminar, Dr. Michał Kruger (Faculty of Archaeology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań) will deliver a lecture: “Tartessian culture on the Iberian Peninsula: state of the art and research perspectives”.
Abstract: The aim of the lecture is to present the range of topics related to the Bronze Age–Iron Age transition in the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. In this region, a civilization known to the Greeks as Tartessos developed, which in archaeological terminology is referred to as the Tartessian culture. In Central Europe, knowledge of the western edges of the Mediterranean basin is rather limited. The talk will present various historiographical traditions that link the origins of this culture to foreign influences, mainly Phoenician, while marginalizing the internal dynamics of local communities, as well as approaches that recognize the indigenous roots of the Tartessian culture shaped in the Late Bronze Age. The lecture will also discuss the results of analytical studies that have led, among other things, to a more precise chronology and a better understanding of the production and use of ceramic vessels in this region. Finally, the talk will outline perspectives for new fieldwork between the valleys of the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers.
The seminar will take place on Thursday, 21 May, at 2 pm (Warsaw time) in Room 119 at the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology office.
