Training Course in Digital Archaeology for Early Career Scholars starts at PCMA UW

The aim of the international course organized by the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw (PCMA UW), is to introduce young archaeologists and heritage management specialists to advanced digital tools essential for modern documentation, analysis, and promotion of archaeological sites and historic objects.

Young researchers and representatives of academic, educational, and heritage management institutions involved in the protection of cultural heritage in their own countries or in countries where they conduct research have been invited to participate in the course. The participants include staff members of PCMA UW, other units of the University of Warsaw, as well as institutions with which PCMA UW cooperates in Armenia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, Sudan, and Syria. The workshop is coordinated by Adrian Chlebowski, head of the Digital Archaeology Lab at PCMA UW.

Through the organization of international workshops, PCMA UW actively contributes to the internationalization of the University of Warsaw’s activities. These efforts not only facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience between specialists from different countries, but also help build long-term networks of academic collaboration, strengthening the University’s position in the international research community. Thanks to PCMA UW’s involvement in educational and research projects conducted in partnership with international institutions, the University of Warsaw reinforces its role as a key actor in supporting the protection and development of cultural heritage on a global scale.

The course program includes workshops on GIS (database creation, spatial visualization, and analysis), Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry (processing field data into 3D models), and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI, 2.5D surface documentation). The course emphasizes developing skills in the conscious selection of tools, critical assessment of methods, and independent application of technologies in research projects. In addition, through workshops and networking opportunities, it fosters the development of professional contacts within an international academic environment.
