Shota Mamuladze (1952–2024)

We deeply mourn the sudden passing on 10 January 2024 of Shota Mamuladze, Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, the Co-Director and Friend of the Polish-Georgian Gonio-Apsaros Expedition.

Professor Shota Mamuladze was a distinguished archaeologist, museum scientist, specialist in the archaeology of Georgia, head of the study of one of the most prominent archaeological sites on the Black Sea – the Roman fort of Apsaros. He was also the Director of the Gonio-Apsaros Archaeological and Architectural Site for many years. He devoted his scientific life to the study of the Roman military presence in Colchis and the earlier archaeological cultures in Adjara. He was a teacher and mentor to many generations of Georgian archaeologists and, for the last 10 years, also a role model for Polish archaeology students doing their internships at the Apsaros Fort.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
