With the passing of Prof. Karol Piasecki, the archaeological community has lost an outstanding personality and a versatile scholar working in physical and historical anthropology and American studies, but also a skilled ornithologist and local guide.
Piasecki graduated from the Department of Biology at the University of Warsaw but his doctoral dissertation was already devoted to physical anthropology, while his post-doctoral thesis focused on the anthropological structure of Peru in the pre-Hispanic period. He participated not only in research in South America and Europe, but also worked with many PCMA UW expeditions in Africa and the Middle East. Between 1998 and 2015 he took part in projects in Egypt (Alexandria, Naqlun), Sudan (Banganarti, Old Dongola and research in the Fourth Cataract region), Syria (Tell Qaramel, Palmyra, Hawarte) and Lebanon (Chhim and Jiyeh).
