IDUB grant for bioarchaeological workshop in Sudan

Dr Iwona Kozieradzka-Ogunmakin has received funding within the “Excellence Initiative” (IDUB II.1.2 – Establishing and strengthening cooperation with strategic partners) to deliver a four-day bioarchaeology workshop for archaeologists and students of archaeology in Sudan.

The workshop will take place at the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM) in Khartoum from the 16th to the 19th of January 2023. The workshop will be delivered in collaboration with Dr Kendra Sirak (Harvard Medical School) and Dr Robert Stark (PCMA UW).

A collaboration between the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw, and NCAM has resulted in a number of archaeological projects undertaken in Sudan. The aim of the workshop is to exchange knowledge and improve academic competency of fellow archaeologists and local students of archaeology in the field of bioarchaeology (recovery, documenting and the study of human skeletal remains from archaeological contexts, including biomolecular analyses, such as ancient DNA).

The workshop will comprise short introductory lectures and hands-on practicals.
