The promotion of the book by Prof. Michał Gawlikowski entitled “Tadmor – Palmyra. A Caravan City between East and West” took place at the University of Warsaw on Wednesday, 28th April 2022.
The meeting in the Columned Hall in the building of the Faculty of History gathered numerous members of the PCMA UW expedition, which conducted research in Palmyra in the years 1959-2011, for most of the time (from 1963 to 2009) under Prof. Gawlikowski’s direction. Representatives of the publisher, among them Assist. Prof. Józef Grabski, president of the Foundation for the Promotion of Culture “IRSA”, talked about the conception of the book and the publication process. The Author’s laudation was presented by the hosts of the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Bartosz Kontny, Dean of the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw and Prof. Piotr Bieliński, Chairman of the PCMA UW Board.
Prof. Michał Gawlikowski described the history of his research in Palmyra, sketching also the story of this ancient city from its beginnings until its destruction by Daesh. He also commemorated the long-time director of the Palmyra Museum and his friend, Khaled al-Asad.
At the end of the meeting, Professor Włodzimierz Lengauer, the Author’s friend and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warsaw, led a discussion on the changes in the social perception of archaeological discoveries and the place of the traditionally understood classical world in today’s pop culture.
