Presentations in the PCMA Seminar series will continue this November with Dr. Paweł Polkowski’s talk: “Dakhleh Oasis: The last 10 years of rock art research”.
Dr. Paweł Polkowski of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw (PCMA UW) and the Archaeological Museum in Poznań has led the Dakhleh Oasis Project Petroglyph Unit, working in the Western Desert in Egypt, since 2016. He was the principal investigator of research projects funded by National Science Centre (NSC) grants and held a PCMA UW and Institut français d’archéologie orientale post-doctoral fellowship in Cairo. This year, he received NSC Award in the category of humanities, social sciences and arts.
Abstract: “The research of the Dakhleh Oasis Project (DOP), carried out already for more than 40 years, involves studying various aspects of the oasis’ history and archaeology from the Palaeolithic to the modern era. One of the expeditions affiliated to the DOP, and working since 1985, is a Polish expedition called the DOP Petroglyph Unit.
In this lecture, I would like to present the latest research on Dakhleh petroglyphs conducted by me since 2011 under the auspices of the Poznań Archaeological Museum within the framework of three projects financed by the National Science Centre. During my talk, I intend to present the scope of fieldwork and characterise the most important research questions I have tackled so far. Finally, I shall discuss the inconveniences with which the expedition has to struggle in recent years.”
