Call for Papers: 5th Sudan Studies conference to be held in Warsaw

The fifth edition of the Sudan Studies conference will be held in Warsaw. This international scientific meeting is organized each year in a different country that conducts research in this part of Africa.

The conference is organized by the University of Durham, and its Warsaw edition will be co-organized by the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Warsaw in cooperation with the National Museum in Warsaw. The event and subsequent publication received the Ministry of Science and Higher Education funding under the  “Excellent Science” program (contract number DNK/SP/ 465612/2020).

The first Sudan Studies conference was hosted by the University of Durham in 2017 and the main organizer was Dr. Samantha Tipper. This institution and Dr. Tipper remain the co-organizers of all subsequent events in this series. In 2018, the event was held at the University of Cambridge, and in 2019, the University of Oxford. In 2020, the conference was planned at the University of Naples but had to be canceled due to COVID-19.

The Sudan Studies conference will provide an opportunity for the exchange of scientific experiences and the presentation of the latest research results. – Apart from archaeologists, we invite also specialists in other fields to participate in the conference: ethnologists, physical anthropologists, chemists, geographers, linguists, conservators, and other specialists dealing with the broadly understood cultural heritage of the past and of the present inhabitants of the territory of Sudan – says Dr. Mariusz Drzewiecki of the PCMA UW, who coordinates the conference preparations.

It will also offer a possibility of getting acquainted with the latest approach to the prehistory and the history of the region, to be up to date with unique archaeological sites and methods of scientific work, artifacts obtained in the course of the research, as well as listening to the professional reports of researchers working in this part of Africa. Moreover, the aim of the conference is to integrate the international research community. It will be a time to reflect on current projects and a space for ideas for future research initiatives.

The conference will be held on 4 September 2021. To submit a paper, go to the conference registration website.
